SEO 101

Create content and pages about the things that you want to rank for. Let’s take an example: I would like to rank for terms “SEO expert Auckland” or “Auckland SEO specialist” because I'm an SEO expert and I work in Auckland and I would love to help you.

My purpose in the last year and a half has been creating this company, called Team Empathy, and Team Empathy as an entity. It's me plus a few other people who help purpose-driven companies and seven-figure businesses scale their impact with growth marketing.

A big part of what I do is SEO. Hence why we're talking about SEO today. And I've got a whole bunch of examples to show you why I am an SEO expert in Auckland and how I work.

Recap

But before that, to give you a bit of a recap, I'm an Auckland-born boy. I grew up in Southeast Auckland as a farm kid.

I got into marketing, commerce, and university. And then I started hanging out with my cousin in 2015. He was an SEO freelancer.

We created an SEO business out of that. We scaled that over four years into an inbound marketing agency. We used HubSpot and we really grew our business: our team was 10 people. 

We were working with hundreds of companies and we did some really cool work, but then we sold it in 2019 because we both wanted to kind of change our pace a bit and realize what we wanted to do in life.

For me, that was helping people. I love helping people. I know you love using the gifts that I have, which are teaching and coaching, engaging with people, and talking, which is why I'm writing this article.

And you'll notice that this page is pretty much a transcription of this video. The main reason for that is I'm using my key ability, which is speaking. I love speaking and teaching.

I can still be an SEO expert without having to write this copy because I can speak it and then get it transcribed and put onto this page, but enough about my life. 

Team Empathy: Auckland SEO Experts

We've got one of my clients: One Day Video. They create amazing explainer videos. If we search for “video production Auckland”, which gets about 266 searches per month, they come right on the top in the map pack or the three-pack, which is one of the organic parts of SEO.

If you can rank there for your service, you immediately have a lot more visibility in your target location. It's as simple as that if you say what you do and where you do it on your Google Business Profile.

Just access or create your Google Business Profile account and make sure your title states what you do, where you do it, and who you are. Then make sure your primary category is the most representative of the thing that you do. Once this is done, you can add a couple more categories there as well. And then you can put your actual business address in, or just your area.

Afterward, make sure you cover your service areas as well. You can do it for like 20 different areas and it’s literally going to make you pop up the top.

Example: Swimming Lessons Auckland

Another example: “swimming lessons Auckland”. Fulton Swim School bought me right away. That's another one of my clients.

They have 55 reviews. This is a big reason why they appear at the top of the search page. Plus, their title set correctly.

Example: Skip Bin Hire

One more example: “skipping bin”, which gets a thousand searches per month. Pink Bins in Auckland. Boom, 90 reviews, 4.8 stars. They are on the organic search results and I guess this is the space that they'll be operating from for a while.

So hopefully I'm demonstrating that I'm worthy to be considered when looking for an SEO consultant in Auckland .

So how do I get these results? Google Business Profile helped a loooot. It's a really simple, quick-win that anyone can do really quickly.

But while we work on your Google Business Profile, we also have to make sure that you create your avatar. We kind of do it for you. Your avatar is your fictitious representation of your ideal client. And what's important here is understanding who your audience is.

This is rule number one of marketing. Understanding your audience shapes everything else going forward: if you know who your person is, you know, what problems they experience, you know what questions they've got. So you can answer those questions. You can solve those problems and you can understand what they're going to be searching for.

Optimizing Specific Pages

So part of that, we do your keyword and competitor research for you. We help you identify what keywords you need to be ranking for, what are some other opportunities, and what are your competitors up to?

What are they ranking for and you're not? Every page should be specific to what it's speaking about.

So if I have a specific page that’s all about care packages, this page should all be about care packages and I should want to rank for that term “care packages”. So it may not actually be helping me from an SEO point of view, but that's okay since we might change it to “SEO care packages” because this is more thematic to what I'm talking about.

So you need to know exactly what each page is about, and you need to make sure your meta title, description, your header tags, and relevant content are all on your page, the images are all aligned with those keywords, and what you're trying to communicate. And that's really important for every single page on your website.

Website Optimization

You need to make sure your overall website is high speed and you need to make sure your core vitals are in place.

Core vitals are a new thing. They came into play in May 2020, and essentially what they do is track your speed. Essentially, they track your user interface and overall user experience. And if you have a poor ability to engage your audience, you're actually going to lose out on SEO.

It's a really important part, so we check that for you and then we give you suggestions for your web design to improve your speed and engagement.

Backlink Building

Backlinks are probably one of the most important things for SEO. A backlink is a link from another website that links to yours.

If you get lots of links from other websites and they're good websites, they're high authority websites that have been around for a long time, then you will get their link juice and link juice is credibility trust, right? You get part of their trust because they're speaking about you.

It's kind of like a referral. When you tag someone in a post or you do a shout-out to someone, you are giving them credibility, you are giving them trust. It’s the exact same thing, but it’s an actual link that's clickable. That's the only difference.

You want to get as many backlinks from quality sources as possible, and you also want that number to be consistent every month. Any SEO expert knows this: consistent high-quality backlinks are more important than, let’s say, 300 backlinks for 20 bucks from Fiverr because they're probably going to be low quality and it's going to be inconsistent.

So you need to be consistent and have quality links. And it's probably one of the biggest things.

Let me just tell you that not many companies are transparent. 

I feel like you'll find no one else who actually shows you all this exact information because lots of SEO specialists in Auckland like to do their SEO behind closed doors. But I'm telling you, like any good, empathetic, and moral SEO expert will tell you: it comes down to good backlinks, good page hygiene, making sure you have Google Business Profile set up, and optimizing everything else.

Everything should be transparent in my suggestions. 

Reporting

I like to do everything right. I've got another tab only for your rankings. We update you on the changes every single month. These come live, so rather than just the automatic report, I actually get my team to manually update the information because it's important to show the exact info and have a month-on-month comparison.

Rankings

So you can see all the nice, green, improved rankings and how many the people are coming, not just the rankings, but actual clicks.

On-Page SEO Changes

You can see all the changes that we've made on on-page SEO. Here we talk about each page on your website and all the changes we do on the title of each page, meta title, meta description, headings - that's all there. What else? We got tag suggestions for each page and keywords that should be added to each page as well.

So we go above and beyond to make sure that everything is sorted for you. 

90-Days Plans

What else have we got on our reporting documents? Content plan and 90-day plan! This is the last part of the fundamentals package and just like everything that we do for you, plans are really important.

Funnily, 90 days is a great amount of time to move forward with anything in life. It's a good amount of time for us to get behind, get excited, and hustle, but it's not too long that it feels daunting.

It's achievable. 

So we should be checking in every quarter and making sure that we did everything we were supposed to: the things that we said we'd do and the results we’ve got.

Content plan

It’s also very important that you build a marketing plan and I'll help.

This part is in the fundamentals package as well and I'm actually moving it into my care package as part of the process every month. So when it comes to the plan, we actually build a marketing plan for you because it's really important for your work and our work.

At the end of the day, I'm not just an SEO consultant or an SEO expert in Auckland. I'm also a growth marketer. I'm also someone who cares about your business. What's really important for me, is making sure that you're taking all the right steps so that you're not just getting better rankings on Google and more traffic, but you're converting people on your website, that you're helping people through their journey.

There's a lot more that goes into marketing than just SEO, right? SEO is part of one of the traffic sources, right?

There are three traffic sources for any business or website:

  1. There's organic traffic, which is also Google Business Profile listing, and organic search results. It has super high intent because people are searching for stuff that they want.

  2. There's paid traffic, which you get in through Google ads. Again, that's high intent. But you can also have paid traffic on social media websites, like Facebook and Instagram - that's more reactive. So you're kind of trying to get people's attention and then you have to nurture them.

  3. There are referral or partner networks, which means people are referring you. It’s also very valuable.

So there are lots of different things that we need to consider in terms of the ways that traffic comes in and then how we niche our audience going forward.

There are also other topics like long-term and short-term marketing, it goes on and on, but I am making it my duty to talk about these things, so that, you know more and that you come into it with a clear understanding of what you need.

Finding an SEO Expert in Auckland

When you're looking for an Auckland SEO specialist or an SEO expert, make sure they cover all these things, make sure there's a high level of trust, make sure you know exactly the work they do, and the results they can deliver. But please do not forget to see if they genuinely care about you and your business and the next steps, not just rankings and traffic, but also what's happening going forward. They don't necessarily have to be able to do it all for you, but in my experience, there has to be a level of continuity, because if they don't care about the entire business and if they don't care about you, your goals, and your work holistically, there's never going to be a real strong connection.

So, when talking to Auckland SEO experts, keep all of this in mind: you want to make sure that the person who comes on board really cares about you.
